Are There Tariffs for American Customers?
Update, 16:50, March 3, 2025
Tariffs on goods from Canada are set to begin March 4, 2025, but it's not all bad news for us or our customers.
On January 31, 2025, The White House announced tariffs of 25% on imports of Made in Canada products to the USA. On February 1 the Executive Order (EO) with these tariffs was released. March 2, 2025, an Amendment was released invoking the original 25% tariff effective March 4, but the de minimis exemption was reinstated, pending further action. This is key for germansupply and our American customers.
How does the EO affect shipping of orders to the USA?
Since almost 100% of orders we ship to the USA are under $800 in value, all such orders will fall under the 19 U.S.C. 1321 de minimis exemption. This means that effectively no tariffs will apply to your order. When orders exceed the $800 threshold we typically break such an order into multiple shipments to retain the exemption. Since 2002 we have shipped thousands of orders to the USA and as far as we know none have ever incurred duty for the customer to pay.
Also note that the 25% tariff, if or when the de minimis exemption is eliminated, will only apply to the Canadian content of a shipment. There are relatively few products we sell that are made in Canada, so these tariffs should have a minimal effect on the prices our American customers will pay for their germansuply orders even if the de minimis exemption goes away. (we hope it stays!)
We thank all our customers and especially appreciate the thousands of American VW enthusiasts who have helped us grow our business since we began in 2002, and we look forward to being able to continue to provide great service, product knowledge and advice and of course great parts for your VW projects—today, tomorrow, and into the future.
